Cast iron is the traditional material for a fire bowl: it is thick, heavy and stores heat, so the bowl keeps radiating warmth long after the flames have died down to embers. This 56 cm bowl has a deep, rounded shape and a thick rolled rim, and it sits securely in a black steel stand with three legs and a lower ring. A round cast iron grill grate rests on the rim for toasting, cooking sausages or keeping a kettle warm over the embers, and lifts off when you want an open fire.

Care

Cast iron holds heat for a long time, so let the bowl cool completely before you touch or move it. Empty the ash once it is cold and keep the bowl dry when it is not in use - a light wipe with vegetable oil after the season keeps surface rust away. Clean the grill grate with a wire brush while it is still slightly warm, never with cold water on hot iron, which can crack it.

Safety

Use outdoors only, on a level, non-combustible surface such as paving, slate or gravel - never on timber decking or grass - at least 3 m from buildings, fences, trees and overhanging branches. Burn only dry, seasoned firewood or kiln-dried logs - never petrol, lighter fluid or rubbish - and check local smoke control and bonfire rules before use. Never leave a fire unattended, keep children and pets at a safe distance, and keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby. The metal gets very hot: wear heat-resistant gloves and use a fire poker to move logs. Lift the grill grate only with heat-resistant gloves.
